DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The quicker, the better. Bethune-Cookman needed just 69 minutes to defeat Savannah State 3-0 (25-6,25-15,25-10) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division match Friday in historic Moore Gymnasium.
B-CU (10-15 overall, 4-2 MEAC South) snapped a five-match losing streak and defeated Savannah State (0-21,0-5) for the fifth time this season.
"It's always tough when you face a team so many times," said B-CU coach Isaac Raphael. "There's the tendency to play down, but this was quite the opposite. This was one of our best matches in a while."
Expediting matters was a strong serving night that saw the Lady Wildcats register 14 service aces. Linda Nwabuko had five and Krysta Gardner three.
"We did a good job of finding location with our serves," Raphael said.
Gardner registered her 700th career kill in the second set and finished with 14 in addition to six digs. Nwabuko hit .615 as the senior registered ten kills and four blocks.
Janeen Davis added nine kills, six digs and two aces. Freshman setter Aubrianna Curtis posted 28 assists while Jennifer Jimenez had 14 digs.
B-CU scored the final 13 points of the opening set. Savannah State had its only lead of the match in the third at 5-4 before B-CU 16 of the next 18 points for a 21-7 lead.
The Lady Wildcats' home finale is Sunday against South Carolina State at 1 p.m. It's also Senior Day.
