Jenkins Sees Wildcats Playing A Florida FBS Team Annually

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – As Bethune-Cookman prepares to face the Miami Hurricanes in its first-ever game against an FBS opponent, Head Coach Brian Jenkins sees a future where the Wildcats play an in-state FBS opponent once a season.

“I would love to play all the Florida teams at one point,” Jenkins said at his weekly media luncheon. “I think it's a good thing when Florida schools can play against each other, compete and show that we have some of the best talent in the nation.”

B-CU will face Miami again in 2012 and UCF in 2013. Games against Florida, Florida State, FIU and USF appeal to Jenkins as well.

“It gives our fans another chance to travel to somewhere close,” Jenkins said. “And our players to play against some of the guys they played with in high school. Both parties can think of it as a home game even though it would be away.”

But there would be just one FBS opponent each season.

“One game is enough because our conference is so competitive,” said Jenkins.” Playing two or three games like that a year is putting yourself in a bad position.”

Paramount to scheduling FBS means staying at a high level on the FCS level, and Jenkins knows that.

“Bethune-Cookman has to have a quality program to line up against teams like that,” noted Jenkins. “I'm sure they don't want to line up against a team that is not going to compete.”

Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Sun Life Stadium.
