GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Making one of the quickest turnarounds in track & field, B-CU competed Saturday at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center, performing less than 24 hours after a two day meet at UAB. Upon returning to Florida, B-CU's relays and field events consistently earned the top spots in the meet, but several familiar faces earned high marks.
“It was a tough and grueling end to our week, but very successful,” said Head Coach Donald Cooper of the performances. “I told the group, 'this is where we establish some resiliency', with new PR's being achieved, it proved to hold true.”
The men's 4 x 400m relay (composed of Martin Embry, Chris Jackson, and Robert Horton) topped the field for the Wildcats, winning the event in a combined time of 3:17.98; the best time for a B-CU relay this indoor season, coming at the very end of the meet.
Members of the relay also set high marks individually, with Jackson coming in eighth in the 55m (6.50), just behind Angelo Cabrera, who finished sixth (6.37), while Horton earned ninth in the 400m in 50.90.
After performing in the first meet of the weekend, Kemar Clarke followed up his third place finish in the 60m hurdles at UAB with a second place mark of 7.41 seconds in Gainesville. Clarke also finished fifth in the 200m with a time of 22.53.
Topping the women's performances, freshman Desiree Richardson tossed a personal record 13.00m (42-08.00 ft.) in the shot put for a second place finish.
Making her 2012 debut in indoor, MEAC Individual Cross Country Champion Kadian Dunkley took on the 5000m run, earning third place in a time of 18:31.17.
The women's 4 x 400m relay (composed of Raven Thomas, Sandricka Simmons, Keyona Thomas, and Erika Graham) ran a time of 4:00.40 for a fifth place finish with their top time of the year so far.
The field events were an area of strength for B-CU at Jimmy Carnes, particularly for the women. Deidra Jordan reached a height of 1.61m (5-03.25 ft.) in the high jump for a fourth place finish. Also in the HJ, Juliette Hyppolite earned eighth at 1.56m (5-01.25 ft.). Sasha Smallwood topped her UAB performance with another fourth place mark for B-CU, hitting 3.40m (11-01.75 ft.) in the pole vault. Fellow vaulter Elizabeth Sims was eighth at 2.95m (9-08.00 ft.).
Michael Sullivan and Akeem Barthol each hit 4.25m – 13-11.25 ft. in the pole vault for seventh place tie, with Sullivan hitting a PR.
Tavares Harris also logged a 2:02.22 in the 800m for tenth place.
“We have a long week in addition to the start of classes, but we will continue to work and improve for next week,” Cooper said.
The Wildcats made the most of a great opportunity to become familiar and get a taste for the track, where there will return to next weekend for the Gator Invite next Sunday, January 22.
