Every
Bethune-Cookman student-athlete has a story...a story to share with the Wildcats
nation. Throughout the course of the indoor/outdoor track & field season,
BCUathletics.com will take an inside look at each of the men's and women's
student-athletes for track & field, detailing the story each has to offer.
One-by-one, we hear from them. These are the Bethune-Cookman University
Wildcats...

What
Brought You to Bethune-Cookman University?
The
track program was up-and-coming, and I wanted to be a part of that. When I met
with Coach [Donald] Cooper, he was very nice and I knew that I wanted to come
be a part of this program.
What's
the best thing about Coach Cooper?
He is
always learning, and he is always teaching. Whatever he learns, he passes on to
us. Just a great, great coach.
What's
something about Coach Cooper that people might not know?
He has a
generous heart. A lot of people see him, and they may be intimidated because of
his size. But he's really a nice guy and would do anything for anybody.
What is
the best aspect about being a part of B-CU track & field?
There
are a lot of good things, actually. The way people treat you around school with
fellow students. They know you're a track athlete, and they cheer you on. It's
just a privilege. A lot of people look up to us and we get a lot of attention.
Teachers also push us harder because they want us to be good on the track and
in the classroom for when we're not running track later in life - to have
something to fall back on.
What
does it mean to the B-CU program knowing someone in the past has made it to the
Olympics and won an NCAA title here?
It gives
us hope that other people can do it too. It pushes us to practice and perform
harder. We've had people like Joel Redhead and Ronnie Ash. So, a lot of great
people have come through this program, and it's starting to become tradition
now.
What
does it mean to tell recruits '"you can be part of the next level of B-CU track
& field"?
That
part of talking to former high school teammates and when recruits come in, it
really means a lot. Once they see it, they want to be a part of it. They think
to themselves "this guy made it to the Olympic trials and it can be done at
Bethune-Cookman". Coach Cooper has a lot to offer. So, maybe they'll come here
now and learn from him and get better.
What
kinds of things do you do to get ready for a race?
I always
set a good music playlist; say my prayers; go through everything in my mind. I
like to stay focused and not overthink anything. I remind myself that I've done
it in practice a hundred times. So, let's go out and do what we've been doing.
What
artists are on your playlist before a meet?
You know
I've got to have some Lil Wayne and Ace Hood. I always have "Hustle Hard" by
Ace Hood going as one of my top songs.
What is the
biggest difference between high school and collegiate training regiments?
The
time. In college you can put in more time because you can go in-between
classes, after classes, weekends - whenever. In college, you're on your own
time a lot. So, you can always make some time to go out to the track and put in
more work. In high school, you're either at home doing chores or things around
the house that you don't have to do in college all the time being away from
home.
What is
something most people may not know about you?
I don't
really know. I guess most people wouldn't think that I have a wild side, at
times.
What is
something that you take time to do away from the track?
I like
to play video games, or I go out to the beach and boogie board or something like
that in the water.
What are
three words that best describe you and why?
Dedicated
- because I can go out and put in countless hours on the track.
Loyal -
I'm loyal to the program and I'm here because I like it.
Hard-working
- I work hard on and off the track. I've been working hard on my grades, as
well as improving my status on the track.
What has
been the biggest accomplishment of your career - high school or college?
I made
it to AAU Nationals and I was the state champion coming out of high school. I
placed 12th at Nationals, and I was voted homecoming king in high school.
What is
your number one goal at Bethune-Cookman?
I want
to graduate from Bethune-Cookman University with a degree and a 3.4 grade point
average.
