#MaryMemories: A Song from the Heart

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – With BCUathletics.com having launched the social media campaign “#24kCountdown to Kickoff”, every Monday we will feature a little known history fact about our founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, and how she helped to mold the Maroon and Gold into the program that it is today.

As BCUathletics.com looks at another little-known fact about Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, one question comes to the forefront rapidly. Did you know the football team could sing, and from the heart?

One of the best stories handed down from generation to generation on the Bethune-Cookman campus is how talented some of the early football teams were. We're not talking being able to play on both sides of the ball either.

Musical talent was not limited to just developing band and choirs. The football team could sing, too.

The story is that Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was working in her house one day, dealing with some financial problems associated with the college. Word had gotten around that the discussions were serious, and Dr. Bethune was stressed on the matter.

That word got to the football team as its practice was winding down. Team captains gathered everyone together, marched over to Dr. Bethune's house, and began serenading her in hopes of cheering her up.

Dr. Bethune came out on the porch and within moments, she had the biggest smile on her face.

“My boys,” Dr. Bethune smiled, her voice resonating across the campus. “My beautiful black boys”.

These days, the football team leaves the music to the band. The music to Wildcats fans ears these days has more to do with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships.
