BOCA RATON, Fla. – Rhea Simon posted a career-high 20 kills in her first career double-double as Bethune-Cookman dropped a 3-1 (25-18,25-13,24-26,25-23) decision to McNeese State in the FAU Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The junior outside hitter from the U.S. Virgin Islands , who also had 14 digs, was named to the all-tournament team along with junior setter Hazel Ortiz-Rosado, who had 38 assists, nine digs and four kills.
Freshmen Rechez Lindsay and sophomore Jill Arlaud had 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
The Lady Cats (0-3) erased an 18-13 deficit in the third, tying the game at 23 on a block by Ortiz-Rosado, Lauren Turner and Simon. McNeese State (2-1) regained the lead, but B-CU tied the game again and got a Simon kill and a Destiny Hudson block to take the set.
In the fourth set, McNeese State led 21-15, but B-CU got as close as 23-22 and 24-23 on Simon kills. B-CU had an early 7-3 lead in the set.
For the tournament, Simon had 42 kills and Ortiz-Rosado 75 assists.
B-CU returns to action next Friday at the Jacksonville Invitational.
NOTE: Simon had 59 attempts, the seventh sixth-highest single-match total in program history.
