About the Lady Wildcats
Ranking seventh in the latest conference standings with a 1-1 record in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play, the Lady Wildcats move on to the conference slate for the remainder of the year, beginning with the five-time reigning MEAC Champion Hampton Lady Pirates (1-0 MEAC) at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats are coming off the most complete game of the season, jumping out early last Saturday and holding off Western Carolina, 63-53, snapping a five-game losing skid and earning Vanessa Blair-Lewis' 200th coaching victory. Leading the charge in that contest were guard Kendra Cooper and guard/forward Kayla Crawford.
A redshirt senior and B-CU's lone captain earned her fourth double-double or 18 points and 11 rebounds against the Catamounts. This season, the Miami native is averaging 9.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per contest. Taking charge in the first against WCU, Cooper put up 20 points, including four from long range. The sophomore leads the B-CU scorers, putting up 13.3 points per game.
Putting on a defensive show against WCU, redshirt sophomore center Kailyn Williams logged seven (7) blocks and a steal and is a force for B-CU in the paint. So far this year, she has 45 (3.2 BPG) rejections, along with 8.0 PPG and 5.9 RPG.
About the Hampton Lady Pirates
Although the Hampton record this season may not be what fans have come to expect so far, this team is no less dangerous under sixth-year Head Coach David Six. The Lady Pirates have met a very tough slate head on in the non-conference, including meetings with Northwestern, Kansas State, Washington State and top-ranked South Carolina.
Leading the way so far for Hampton NCAA 28th-ranked scorere Malia Tate-DeFreitas, putting up 19.7 PPG, who also grabs 4.5 RPG, 2.8 SPG and makes 2.4 APG. Tate-DeFreitas is Hampton's top long-range threat and shoots 29.3 percent from the perimeter and 33.4 percent from the floor.
Just under the double-digit average mark are guards Kyani White and Kenia Cole. White averages 8.9 PPG and 3.6 RPG, and is also a long-range threat, shooting 40.6 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from the perimeter. Cole averages 8.6 PPG and 3.3 RPG, topping the squad in assists with 4.3 APG.
On the glass is Tyler Hobgood, grabbing 6.9 RPG, but is limited in scoring at 2.4 PPG. Also making noise in the paint on both offense and defense is Ryan Jordan, who collects 6.1 RPG and also scores 7.7 PPG.
