DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Despite dropping its first set in league play, Bethune-Cookman volleyball remained unbeaten in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play as the Wildcats (7-12, 4-0 MEAC) took down the North Carolina A&T Aggies (4-8, 2-2 MEAC), 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15) on Friday, Oct. 9 in Moore Gym.
A first set that saw eight ties and four lead changes went back-and-fourth until the Wildcats took advantage of five Aggie errors, using an 8-4 run to close the first set with a 25-20 victory.
It was all B-CU during the second set as NCAT never saw the lead in the game. A Rakaya Neely kill sealed the 25-17 victory, giving the 'Cats the 2-0 advantage heading into the 10-minute intermission.
After a few Aggie adjustments during the break, B-CU was unable to hold on to its perfect MEAC set record, as the Wildcats dropped their first set in the league this season falling 25-22 in the third.
B-CU responded in the fourth, cursing to a 25-17 victory after a Rhea Simon first-contact kill gave the 'Cats the 3-1 match win.
A balanced offense propelled the Wildcats over NCAT, as Delicia Pierre and Simon each finished with a team-best 12 kills, trailed by Neely's 11 and Phylecia Armstrong's 10.
Neely's 11 came on 19 attempts with no errors as the sophomore finished the match hitting .579.
Senior setter Hazel Ortiz Rosado paced the B-CU offense finishing with 40 assists and one dig shy of her ninth double-double of the season.
A balanced defense also held the Wildcats together as Pierre finished with a team-best 17 digs, followed by 16 from Ajsha Davie and Normarie Rolon.
On the net, B-CU finished with a 13.0/5.0 team-block advantage, led by Neely's eight and Ortiz Rosado's six.
The Wildcat victory marked the fourth league win for B-CU this season, leaving the 'Cats as the final unbeaten team in the MEAC.
B-CU returns to the court on Sunday, Oct. 11 as the Wildcats look to remain on top of the league, hosting North Carolina Central at noon.
