DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the second-straight season, Bethune-Cookman volleyball finishes its home schedule perfect against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponents, after the Wildcats took the season sweep over South Carolina State, 3-1 (25-20, 25-26, 25-11, 25-17) on Sunday, Oct. 25 during “Senior Day” in Moore Gym.
Prior to the match, B-CU seniors Destiny Hudson, Hazel Ortiz Rosado, Delicia Pierre and Rhea Simon were honored.
After scoring first during the opening set, a slow start plagued the Wildcats, allowing SCSU to pull ahead 15-10.
Five-straight points and a kill form Phylecia Armstrong knotted the first set at 15, before the Bulldogs pulled ahead, 20-18.
A 7-0 run closed out the first set for the Wildcats, as a Delicia Pierre kill sealed the first-set 25-20 victory.
It was a back-and-forth battle in the second set as the game saw eight ties and two lead changes before SCSU was able to rally off three-straight and take the 26-24 win, tying the match at 1-1 heading into the break.
It was all B-CU in the third as the 'Cats opened the set on a 5-1 run.
B-CU was able to hold the Bulldogs to single-digit scoring late in the match as SCSU broke into double-figures at 21-10. A 4-1 Wildcat advantage closed the set at 25-11 after a Destiny Hudson kill, giving B-CU the 2-1 match lead.
Despite two early ties in the fourth, B-CU dominated again in the final set using a Bulldog service error to capture the 25-17 set win and 3-1 Senior Day victory.
A balanced offense carried the Wildcats as Pierre finished with a match-best 15 kills, following by Simon and Rakaya Neely's 11 each, while Hudson added nine.
Ortiz Rosado dished a match-high 47 assists while also collecting her tenth assist/dig double-double with 11 digs.
Defensively Normaire Rolon led B-CU with 15 digs while Bennett added 10 and on the net the Wildcats out blocked SCSU 9.0 to 4.0, as Armstrong, Neely and Ortiz Rosado each finished with three.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, Nov. 1 as B-CU travels west to take on the rival Florida A&M Rattlers in Tallahassee, Florida at 2 p.m.
