PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Bethune-Cookman volleyball crossed another first off its list, as the Wildcats swept their way into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship match after a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-20) victory over the Morgan State Bears Saturday, Nov. 21 in Princess Anne, Maryland.
B-CU has never earned a spot in the MEAC finals, while the 2015 Wildcats 15 overall victories marks the most in a season since 2001, and second most overall in school history.
The opening set was dominated by B-CU, as the Wildcats showed the No. 2 seed from the north their flawless regular-season record was nothing to be taken lightly, with a 25-13 victory.
Jill Arlaud led the way for the 'Cats in the first knocking in four kills on five attempts, as B-CU's offense only committed three hitting errors compared to the Bears 12.
The Wildcat defense also showed their presence early, out-blocking Morgan State 4.0-to-1.0 early, while earning a 12-to-9 dig advantage.
Set number two opened up in similar fashion as B-CU opened with an 8-1 run, before maintaining the set lead and capturing the 25-19 set victory, heading into intermission with a 2-0 match lead.
Efficiency was the key again in the second, as the Wildcats hit .417 as a team (13-3-24), holding the Bears to a .144 (13-9-35), while also seizing an notable 6.0 team blocks, led by setter Hazel Ortiz Rosado's four in the set.
Again in the third B-CU scored first, pulling ahead 15-8 before the Bears called their first timeout of the set.
Despite allowing Morgan State within three late in the match at 23-20, the Wildcats used back-to-back blocks to end the set and match at 25-20.
Rhea Simon led B-CU offensively, finishing with a match-best nine kills, while fellow senior Delicia Pierre added eight trailed by Arlaud's six.
Ortiz Rosado dished a team-best 26 assists, while also leading the Wildcats on the net with five blocks.
Defensively, Normarie Rolon picked up 12 digs while Rakaya Neely added five blocks including one solo.
As a team, B-CU outhit the Bears .272-to-.028 while out blocking Morgan State 13.0-to-3.0.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, Nov. 22 as B-CU competes for programs's first-ever MEAC Championship. The Wildcats square-up with the No. 1 seed from the north, Howard at 12 noon in Princess Anne, Maryland, on ESPN3.
