Wildcats Close Season with 28-7 Defeat at S.C. State

Bethune-Cookman finishes season 4-4 in MEAC play

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State rolled off 21 unanswered points and eased to a 28-7 victory over visiting Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) football action at Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium. The season finale for both teams, the game was a makeup game from an earlier scheduled October contest before being moved due to Hurricane Matthew.

South Carolina State's Mykal Moody, who switched from wide receiver to quarterback midweek, rushed for a game-high 158 yards and three touchdowns and passed for another score for the host Bulldogs.

Moody, a junior redshirt, threw only three passes — his first of the season — and completed one for a 29-yard score to De'Montrez Burroughs. Moody had touchdown runs of 11, 21 and 12 yards.

Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman was limited to just 72 yards rushing on 37 attempts. The Cats would use redshirt freshman quarterback Akevious Williams throughout the game in place of the injured Larry Brihm, Jr.

Williams completed 12-of-22 passes for just 85 yards and a touchdown for the Maroon and Gold.

"Akevious [Williams] did what he could do for us today, and he showed some good things, as well as some things we need to work on in the off-season," admitted second-year B-CU head coach Terry Sims afterwards. "The guys did not play with a lot of passion today, and that cost us against a team that is as good as South Carolina State."

Defensively, Darius Leonard led the Bulldogs (5-6, 5-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) with a game-high 12 tackles, nine solo. For B-CU, it was Deonte Mayo leading the way with seven tackles, while safety Diquan Richardson grabbed an interception and produced four tackles.

"Diquan had another good game for us, defensively, and that's what he does," said Sims. "He is always going to work hard and try to do everything he can to keep us going on that side of the ball."

Bethune-Cookman's lone score of the game came in the second quarter when Williams found a streaking Jaime Wilson in the end zone for a hook-up of 29 yards and the score. The extra point from Uriel Hernandez tied the game at 7-all with 13:22 remaining in the first half.

However, the hosts peeled off a touchdown from Moody just three minutes later in order to take a 14-7 advantage in the locker room at the break.
