DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman women's basketball avenged its 2015 controversial setback in Dover, Delaware by handing Delaware State a convincing 31-point loss (66-35) and making it four-straight wins Saturday, Feb. 6 during the Wildcat's “Senior Day” in Moore Gymnasium.
The entire active B-CU roster saw a minimum nine minutes of action during the victory, while all 10 Wildcats scored at least three points and collected one rebound.
Despite the mostly even distribution on the B-CU offensive end, junior Kendra Cooper (Spring, Texas) pulled ahead of the pack scoring a game-best 23 points, finishing 9-for-10 at the line. Rookie Ashanti Hunt (Washington, D.C.) trailed Cooper with seven points, while Kailyn Williams (New Orleans, La.) lead on the glass with eight boards.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Hornets made their way on the scoreboard with an Aliah Stinnett jumper at the 7:49 mark.
After DSU brought the game within one midway through the opening stanza, B-CU used a 17-2 run to close out the first ten minutes, leading 22-7.
The Wildcats outscored the Hornets again in the second period, 20-to-10, taking a 42-17 lead into the locker room.
After the first half, B-CU outshot the Hornets 45.5%-to-25.9%, while also forcing 10 DSU turnovers compared to the Wildcat's two.
Momentum did not stop after the first twenty minutes, as Cooper knocked down two foul shots fifteen seconds into the third quarter to extend the lead to 27.
Rookie Angel Golden (Tampa, Fla.), sank a three at the 1:54 mark in the third, giving the Wildcats their largest lead of the game at 41, and wrapping up the quarter with the 60-19 advantage.
The Hornets broke the 20-point mark 40 seconds into the final stanza, before they went on to outscore B-CU 16-to-6 in the final ten minutes of play.
The late effort was not enough to overcome the Wildcat's vengeful first three quarters, as B-CU made it four-straight wins with the 66-35 victory.
B-CU's starting rotation saw limited action in the second half, as the Wildcat's bench scored 21 points during the victory and B-CU turned the Hornet's 25 turnovers into 21 points.
Delaware State was led by Aaliyah Davis' 11 points and 11 boards, while Nikkei Blackburn led on the glass with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Bethune-Cookman returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 13 as the Wildcats head to Bull City facing North Carolina Central during a 2 p.m., match-up in McDougald-McLendon Arena.
