BOCA RATON, Florida – Freshman Alana Handy led the Wildcat's offense as the rookie combined for 21 kills during a loss to UNF 3-1, (17-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20) and Drake 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-18) to close opening weekend (Aug. 27) at the FAU Invitational.
MATCH ONE
B-CU saw its first set victory of the season on Saturday morning after taking the first from UNF 25-17.
Handy broke into double digits for the first time this season, finishing with a team-best 14 kills on 38 attempts (.237), while redshirt senior Phylecia Armstrong trailed with eight.
Junior Phalen Clark paced the offense with 35 assists, collecting her first double-double of the season with 10 digs.
On the defensive end, Normaire Rolon Soto collected a team-high 17 digs, while Jai Chapman added 14 and Armstrong finished with a match-high six blocks.
MATCH TWO
While being shut out in the final match of opening weekend, Handy paced the B-CU offense for the second-straight match finishing with a team-best seven kills.
Junior Alondra Baustista added seven kills of her own while Armstrong finished with six.
Clark ran the B-CU offense again with a team-high 18 assists, while the junior setter and Rolon Soto each finished with seven digs.
UP NEXT
Bethune-Cookman volleyball stays on the road as the Wildcats head to New Orleans, Louisiana (Sept. 2-3), for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Tournament. B-CU opens with Sam Houston State at 5 p.m. (EST) on Friday.
