MIAMI -- Ashanti Hunt scored 15 points, had a career-high 16 rebounds and dished out seven assists as Bethune-Cookman defeated host FIU 77-59 Monday night, giving
Vanessa Blair-Lewis her 250th career coaching victory.
Chasimmie Brown also scored 15 points -- all in the second half -- as the Lady Wildcats moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2008-2009 -- Blair-Lewis' first season at Bethune-Cookman.
The Lady Wildcats scored the final 10 points of the first half to take a 39-29 halftime lead. FIU (0-2) closed to six points twice in the third quarter, but Bethune-Cookman pushed its lead up 56-44 on a Brown lay-up with 59 seconds left in the period.
Bethune-Cookman pulled away to a 70-50 lead on an
Amaya Scott lay-up with 4:57 and took its biggest lead at 77-55 on an
Amani Ball three-pointer with 1:14 left.
With Hunt and Brown both in early foul trouble, the Lady Wildcats got a career-high 12 points from
Lyndsey Edwards, including eight in the first quarter.
Angel Golden and
Kanesha Battle each scored nine points for Bethune-Cookman, while Scott had eight points and five boards off the bench.
The Lady Wildcats forced 23 Panther turnovers -- committing just 11-- and snagged 49 rebounds.
Hunt, who also had three blocks and three steals, helped slow FIU's Kristian Hudson, who scored just two of 23 points down the stretch.
Bethune-Cookman hosts Prairie View A&M Monday at 3 p.m.
