DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Alana Handy had 17 kills and 17 digs in Bethune-Cookman's 3-2 (25-23,22-25,25-23,26-28,15-8) loss to Florida Atlantic Sunday afternoon in Moore Gym.
Â
Rakaya Neely added 15 kills, and
Jordan Jefferson  also double-doubled with 14 kills and 10 digs for the Wildcats, now 2-6.
Â
Freshman
Faith Landreneaux tied the single-match block record with 10.
Rechez Lindsay led B-CU with 20 digs while
Phalen Clark recorded 56 assists.
Â
Abbi Reid led Florida Atlantic (9-4) with 21 kills.
Â
B-CU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set and built it to 11-3 on a combined block by Handy and Landreneaux. The Wildcats maintained that lead before FAU stormed back and turned a 23-16 deficit to match point.
Â
Jordan and Neely kills gave B-CU a 25-24 lead. FAU managed ties at 25 and 26 before Handy and Neely registered kills to win the set.
Â
In the fifth set, B-CU had early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Owls scored four unanswered points and never trailed again.
Â
Clark and Landreneaux combined on a block that brought B-CU within 8-7, but FAU pulled away after that.
Â
The Wildcats travel to USF Tuesday for a make-up match at 7 p.m.
Â
HEAD COACH BRITTANY WILLIAMS
Â
"Five sets against a team like FAU … on four days practice. Great match. You had to fight for every point and FAU's not a team that's gives us. They made us earn every point. We did the same with them."
Â
"Make some adjustments here and there and we'll be fine. Not shabby after the break we're coming off of. Everybody else has played 14,15,16 matches. We've played eight."
Â
"We knew we had a diamond in the rough with Faith. She's a steal. For her to get 10 blocks knowing she probably four or five more in her … that's huge."
Â
NOTES: This was the first time in series history B-CU has taken FAU to five sets and the first time since 2011 the Wildcats won a set … Clark's 56 assists were a career-high and matched J'Nai Higgins' total against Jacksonville opening weekend and Ariane Guy's 2005 game against Savannah State for  the third most assists in a single match in program history … Landreneaux matched Javanne Johnson's 2002 match against Stetson for the school record …. Jefferson has now double-doubled in all eight matches, Handy now has four … Lindsay now has three 20-dig matches for the year … B-CU now 1-1 in 5-set matches this season and 3-4 in the
Brittany Williams era.
