LINCOLN, Neb. – Bethune-Cookman's first foray into Big 10 Football ended with a 45-9 loss to Nebraska,
Alfred Adams' touchdown on the final play and the Cornhuskers' social media following completely enamored with Wildcat kicker
Uriel Hernandez.
Adrian Martinez passed for 213 yards and two touchdowns and Devine Ozigbo ran for 110 and another score as the Cornhuskers (2-6) jumped out to a 28-3 first quarter lead in front of a Memorial Stadium crowd of 88,735, that gave the Wildcats (4-5) an appreciative round of applause at the game's conclusion.
The game came together when Nebraska needed
a replacement game for the Sept. 1 opener against Akron that was canceled because of severe weather and through relationships between the respective programs.
"We're definitely appreciative of the opportunity to have a chance to come to Nebraska and play in a historic venue such as Memorial Stadium and play a program like Nebraska," Bethune-Cookman coach
Terry Sims said. "I don't think we played our best. But the outcome is what it is. We had some guys that left it on the field today and played their hearts out.
"A game like this is going to do nothing but help our program, it's going to increase our game speed... because when you play a program like this, you have to increase your game speed," Sims added. "I guess you guys saw the first couple of series, we had to step it up a little bit, because the game speed was a little bit faster than what we're used to, but we picked up. We started matching the game speed a little bit and I think we made some positive plays out there and some things to build on."
The Wildcats had some success moving the ball, racking up 355 total yards but coming up empty on three drives inside the Cornhusker 30 other than Adams' 5-yard run and a first-quarter march that produced Hernandez' 28-yard field goal.
Hernandez' linebacker-like body and a third quarter celebration of his punt that pinned the Cornhuskers inside their five-yard line won the hearts of the internet as the game progressed.
"We came out here all the way from Daytona Beach, you've got to have fun," said Hernandez during his extended time in front of the media post-game. "But at the same time, you've got to know you've got to play. I mean, you make plays (so) you can say you can have fun."
David Israel started at quarterback in place of
Akevious Williams, who left last week's game against North Carolina A&T with a knee injury and finished 12 of 27 for 196 yards.
Jabari Dunham led the Wildcats' 10-play, 82-yard touchdown drive that produced the Adams 5-yard run as time expired.
Steffon Francois finished with three catches for 105 yards, including a 54-yard catch-and-run that set up the Hernandez field goal.
Defensively,
Tydarius Peters and Donald Johnson registered interceptions, while
Kevin Thompson and
Marquis Hendrix combined for three sacks.
Sims saw numerous positive takeaways from the game.
"Number one we can look at the time of possession," Sims said. "We can look at turnovers, we can look at third down stops, and look at third down conversions for our team. I think there are a few things that we can look at and take back to build on for next week."
Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost appreciated Bethune-Cookman's effort.
"I think it was great for both teams," Frost said. "It was the type of game we needed. I think both teams came out of the game really healthy, which is what both coaches wanted. I think it was a win-win for everybody."
Bethune-Cookman returns to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action next Saturday at Morgan State.
