McCabe Coaches With Blair-Lewis On Maternity Leave

BALTIMORE --  Chandler McCabe's first time in a Division I head coaching role was for a team that just earned a national ranking trying to maintain a perfect record in league play and post its first 20-win regular season since the Reagan Administration while filing in for a boss who could go into labor at any moment.

"Pressure? None whatsoever." McCabe could laugh after Bethune-Cookman dispatched Coppin State 75-63 Saturday afternoon.

Angel Golden scored 27 points as Bethune-Cookman, with Head Coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis back home in Daytona Beach on maternity leave, won its 12th consecutive and 22nd regular season conference victory dating back to last season. It also gave Bethune-Cookman (20-4,12-0 MEAC) its first 20-win regular season since 1984-85 and its second straight 20-win campaign.

Also, B-CU, ranked 25th in the College Insider.com Mid-Major poll, maintained its one-game lead over North Carolina A&T and assured itself of a first-round bye at next month's conference tournament in Norfolk.

Blair-Lewis was able to coach the Lady Wildcats' five road conference road games in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, driven to those games with her unable to fly. Doctors have advised Blair-Lewis to remain within one hour of a hospital at this very late state of her second pregnancy. She followed the game online.

"Chandler did a good job, I expect nothing less," Blair-Lewis said via text.  "I'm proud of our coaches and ladies for the victory today."

McCabe got a chance to do some serious coaching in the fourth quarter when Coppin State (6-19,5-8) closed a 45-25 deficit to 58-56 on a Chance Graham lay-up with 7:29 remaining. Graham, held to two points in the first meeting two weeks ago, dropped 34 Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats regained control with a 13-0 run that made it 71-56 with 3:55 to play.

"It's kind of how it has to be," McCabe said. "It's good that I was tested and we were tested. We have to be battle tested to get ready for Morgan State Monday.  We stayed poised."

While Bethune-Coomkan 's defense strayed from its normal stinginess -- the Eagles' 63 points were the most by a Lady Wildcat opponent in conference this season --B-CU got the offense needed from Golden, who posted her fourth consecutive 20-point game.

Golden had 19 first-half points as the Wildcats used nine three-pointers, five from the senior and three from freshman Brianna Battle and a 14-0 second quarter run en route to a 35-23 halftime lead.

"Any open look, I was going to take," Golden said. "They were giving up a lot of looks, and I was focusing on getting my shots."

Ashanti Hunt double-doubled with 10 points and 12 rebounds in addition to four assists, four blocks and four steals. In addition to keying the containment of Graham down the stretch, the defensive specialist often scored after getting the steal. Her steal and dish to Battle for a three-pointer triggered the decisive run.

"We had to pick the energy up on defense," Hunt said. "We started playing Wildcat defense again."

Battle finished with 13 points, including four three-pointers and Chasimmie Brown scored six of her ten points in the fourth quarter.
