Wildcats Drop Home Opener to Jacksonville

Danny Rodriguez lifts his third home run of 2018

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Every year it seems there's one game Bethune-Cookman has to endure wherethe  scores reach football level in three plus hours of midweek baseball.

That was Tuesday night, and unfortunately it was the Wildcats' home opener as Jacksonville struck for 10 runs in the first two innings en route to a 13-8 victory inside Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Evan Fernandez  and Chris Lehane  each drove in four runs, and Jacob Southern added three as the Dolphins, coming off a series win over nationally ranked West Virginia, took the Wildcats mid-week assemblage for 14 hits and three dingers.

Bethune-Cookman (1-3) managed just five hits against the Dolphins (3-1) cadre in the first eight innings, highlighted by Austin Temple, Adrian Garrastazu and Andrew Ciocia combining for 5 1/3 innings of no-hit relief. Temple struck out six.

It did get interesting in the ninth when Nate Sterijevski drove home Kyle Corbin and Ian Claudio singled home Danny Rodriguez and Sterijevski with one out. Then the Wildcats loaded the bases. Jacksonville's Chris Mauloni quickly retired the next two Wildcats batters to earn the save.

Corbin and Rodriguez each had two hits and an RBI for the homestanding Wildcats.

Freshman David Mata had an impressive debut for the Maroon and Gold, giving up just one hit -- even though it was Fernandez's second homer, with three strikeouts.

Brady Norris, younger brother of staff ace Tyler Norris, saw three innings of work while Isaak Gutierrez closed the night with two shutout innings.

Jacksonville struck for four (4) first inning runs and then six in the second.

Bethune-Cookman managed two runs in each of the first two innings.

After a double play, Giovany Lorenzo doubled home Jameel Edney and scored on a wild pitch to close it to 4-2.

In the second, Kyle Corbin brought home transfer Zach Spivey with a sacrifice fly. Danny Rodriguez launched a solo homer to left for his third yard shot of the year.

B-CU added a run in the third when Joseph Fernando doubled down the left field line to bring home Brady Van Hook, who walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
