TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Ashanti Hunt scored 12 points,
Angel Golden 11 and
Brianna Battle 10 as Bethune-Cookman finished atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for the third consecutive year with a 62-42 victory over Florida A&M Thursday evening.
The Lady Wildcats (23-5 overall, 15-1 MEAC) will shared the regular season title with North Carolina A&T (20-8,15-1), who eeked out a 60-57 win at North Carolina Central. North Carolina A&T will be the No. 1 seed at next week's conference tournament in Norfolk, Va. by virtue of Monday's 62-55 victory.
Despite missing two starters due to injury, Bethune-Cookman trailed for less than two minutes, closing the first quarter on a 11-3 run to take a 15-9 advantage after the first minute. Bethune-Cookman held Florida A&M (6-23,4-12) to 17.6 field goal shooting as it pushed its lead to 30-15 at halftime.
Eight different Lady Wildcats scored in a 22-point third quarter, then B-CU pushed its lead to 60-27 on a
Kanesha Battle three-pointer with 5:45 remaining before clearing the bench.
Hunt also had eight rebounds and four assists for Bethune-Cookman, who set a school single-season record for victories, surpassing the old mark of 22 set by the 1979-80 and 1983-84 teams. This also marked the second straight season Bethune-Cookman has gone undefeated (8-0) in MEAC play.
Kanesha Battle had seven points, and Brianna Hardee,
Amaya Scott and
Armani Walker each had six. Hardee and
Brianna Battle posted seven and six rebounds respectively.
Florence Ouattara had an 11-point, 10-rebound double for the Rattlers, who dropped their fifth straight in the rivalry.
Bethune-Cookman will learn its MEAC tournament opponent late Thursday.
NOTES: FAMU's 21.4 FG% was the lowest for a Lady Wildcat opponent this season ... B-CU held opponents under 20 percent 3FG% in eight conference games this season ... MEAC opponents were held under 50 points in 13 of the 16 games ... B-CU has now 17 conference roads games dating back to 2016.
