Norris Brothers K 12 In Twinbill Action

Wildcats split two games with Tigers

Box Score

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman saw a combined 12 strikeouts from brothers Tyler and Brady Norris as the Wildcats split a twin bill with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference brethren Savannah State Friday at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The elder Norris, Tyler, rang up seven strikeouts in a game one victory that BCU took by a 6-2 margin. He worked eight innings, scattering five hits and just one earned run with two walks. Norris garnered the victory to move to 4-6 on the season.

Joe Fernando was responsible for the Wildcats' first run with an RBI single in the third to score Kyle Corbin and tie the game.

With Norris cruising, the 'Cats' offense came alive in the sixth as Jordan Stacy reached on a leadoff single to third, and Jameel Edney smacked his first triple of the season to give BCU a 2-1 lead. Zach Spivey scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly to right that easily plated Edney and BCU led by a pair after six frames.

Danny Rodriguez continued the barrage of hits with an RBI single an inning late to score Fernando.

The Wildcats added their final two runs of the game in the eighth on a Chase DeBonis sacrifice fly and Corbin RBI single.

Edney paced the way with three hits and Ivan Countinho pitched a clean ninth with one strikeout.

Trevor McKenna (2-7) was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs off eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts in seven innings.

Game two saw SSU's Alex Wright ride a three-run third en route to a series-tying 3-1 victory. The Tigers pounced for four hits, including an RBI liner off starter Brady Norris' lower body, in the inning. Norris would hold the Tigers to only one hit outside of the frame, but took the loss falling to 0-2.

Wright worked a complete game with four hits, one run, two walks, and seven strikeouts in seven innings to advance to 2-6.

After reliever Brandon Wilkes pitched a smooth seventh, BCU mounted a rally. Spivey scored on a wild pitch for BCU's first run, and the Wildcats brought the tying run up before a 3-1 putout ended the comeback attempt.

BCU is now 19-32 overall and 13-10 in the MEAC, while Savannah State is 7-33, 4-19 in conference play.

A Senior Day ceremony is planned for prior to tomorrow's 1 p.m. start. Fans are encouraged to arrive at 12:30 in time for the festivities honoring 10 Wildcat seniors at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
