DAYTONA BEACH — Another wondrous Bethune-Cookman baseball run concluded Sunday with the Wildcats falling 12-9 to North Carolina A&T in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament championship game at Embry-Riddle's Sliwa Sunday Monday night.
The Aggies broke open an 8-8 tie with four eighth-inning runs to end Bethune-Cookman's three-year run as conference champions.
Bethune-Cookman saw its season end at 24-34 with a tournament run that included four straight elimination game victories and 18 hours of rain delays.
For the fifth straight game, the Wildcats registered a five-run inning, this one in the third inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead.
Michael Deeb got the scoring started with an RBI single to right, and senior
Jameel Edney plated two more with a single to left.
Giovany Lorenzo's RBI single concluded the scoring..
North Carolina A&T responded with a four-run outburst of its own.
The Wildcats scored in the fourth when Lao came home on a throwing error, then made it 8-4 in the fifth when Lao smacked a two-out, two-run double.
Again, the Aggie responded with three runs in the fifth, then tied it with one run in the seventh before taking control.
The Wildcats made things interesting in the ninth, scoring when Lao doubled and scored on a
Nate Sterijevski RBI groundout, but could come no closer.
In his final game, Lao went 4-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Edney and Deeb each had three hits.
Four Wildcats were named to the All-Tournament team, including Edney, Lao,
Danny Rodriguez and pitcher
Brady Norris.
