NEW ORLEANS -- Totally different feeling about this five-set victory for Bethune-Cookman Saturday at the New Orleans Invitational.
One day after a five-set win over Jackson State that many on the team considered disappointing, the Lady Wildcats posted a satisfying 3-2 (25-22, 25-23, 22-25,17-25, 15-8) win over Mid-Eastern Athletic foe Morgan State than swept Prairie View A&M 3-0 (25-15,25-12,25-19) to complete their stay in the Big Easy with a 3-1 mark.
The tournament helped B-CU (5-5) move to .500 after 10 matches for the first time since 2001.
Morgan State (4-6) erased a two-set deficit to force the tiebreaker, but the Lady Wildcats scored the first two points and opened up a 7-3 lead on a
Delaine Fulton kill.
The lead diminished to 8-7, but two
Meraiah Hill blocks helped B-CU close the match with a 7-1 run.
"A five-set match today was warranted," said B-CU Head Coach
Brittany Williams. "Morgan's a conference team that matches up with us personnel-wise. We left the door open for them to get back into the match. For us, it's a matter of knowing how to stay relaxed when we're ahead."
Jordan Jefferson double-doubled with 17 kills and 18 digs,
Sterling Williamson had 14 kills and
Tynesha Adams 10 for the Lady Wildcats.
Shayla Eugene posted 13 digs.
Williams went with a 6-2 offense Saturday, with
J'nai Higgins and
Ryleigh Taylor handling the setting and giving the Lady Wildcats a taller presence on the front line.
"We haven't had anything like that in a while," Williams said.
B-CU trailed most of the first set, finally taking the lead at 21-20 on a Jefferson ace and then closing the set by taking advantage of three Morgan attack errors. In the second set, B-CU saw an 18-12 advantage fall to ties at 21 and 22, but Williamson posted a block and a kill to help B-CU take a 2-0 lead.
Against Prairie View A&M, B-CU trailed just three times and hit a season-best .330 as a team. Williamson, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 12 kills as 11 different players registered a point. Jefferson and Eugene each had 14 digs.
"To be at .500 is huge, considering that we have 11 freshmen and sophomores and we're still working our way through some injuries," Williams said.
Bethune-Cookman stays closer to home for its fourth tournament of the season next Friday and Saturday at Stetson, facing Chicago State, Brown and the host Hatters.
