ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Bailey Robinson had 14 kills and
Sterling Williamson 11, and
Shayla Eugene had 28 digs as Bethune-Cookman recovered from a slow start for a 3-1 (21-25,25-23,25-20,25-15) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference road victory over South Carolina State Friday.
Eugene's 28 digs tied her for second on the all-time single-match list as the Lady Wildcats (5-11 overall, 2-1 MEAC) overcame dropping the first set and deficits of 6-0 and 14-6 in the second.
A 7-0 run put BCU back in the second set, which saw the Lady Wildcats finally take a 20-19 on a Robinson kill. South Carolina State (0-14,0-3) took a 22-21 lead, but Bethune-Cookman regained control and closed the set on a 4-1 run that included a Eugene service ace and a
Miranda White kill on set point.
Two
Nadia Pace blocks and a White service ace on set point helped Bethune-Cookman pull away from a 19-19 third set tie. The Lady Wildcats never trailed in the fourth set.
Robinson, a freshman, registered both a season-high kill total and hitting percentage of .333. Williamson also had a season-high for kills and also for blocks with five.
White finished with eight kills, two service aces and 13 digs, while Taylor had three service aces and 27 assists. Pace, a freshman, had eight blocks to put herself in the record book, tying for eighth on the all-time single match total.
Bethune-Cookman plays Volusia County rival Stetson in DeLand Sunday at 6 p.m.
