DURHAM, N.C. – Shayla Eugene set two Bethune-Cookman University volleyball records in Sunday's 3-2 regular season finale (22-25,25-20,25-23,21-25,14-9) loss at North Carolina Central.
With her first dig of the match, the senior from Fort Worth, Tex. , passed
Jordan Jefferson's 2018 total of 464 for the single-season dig mark, then preceded to smash the single-match record with 39, besting the previous mark of 33 in 2107 by
Alana Handy against North Carolina Central.
"The strides that young lady has made in her two seasons here is nothing short of amazing," said BCU Head Coach
Brittany Williams. "Shayla went from being a player who initial would serve as a defensive player to stepping in and filling the libero role due to injuries. She has not only made it her position, she has set the STANDARD for every BCU libero to come."Â

Eugene also passed the 500-dig barrier with 503 as the Lady Wildcats (8-23 overall, 5-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) dropped the decision to the Eagles (8-23,7-7) for the Southern Division's No. 2 seed at next week's MEAC tournament in Washington. BCU will open the tournament against Morgan State, the No. 2 seed from the Northern Division.
Faith Landreneaux posted 11 kills, five blocks and two services aces, while
Jordan Jefferson finished with her 43rd double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs while
Miranda White added seven kills and four services aces. BCU forced the fifth set when Landreneaux had two aces and two kills in a set-ending 6-1 run.
The Eagles never trailed in the fifth set after jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The Lady Wildcats got as close as 8-7 when
Tynesha Adams and Landreneaux combined on a block, but North Carolina Central scored six of the next seven points.
Eugene now has 913 digs in two season, the most for a two-year player in the program and third on the all-time list.
"It feels surreal coming in and now breaking all these different records," Eugene said. "But our work isn't done, none of these compares to the feeling of winning BCU's first MEAC title, I'm not done yet!"Â
