DOVER, Del. -- A chance to take the Mid-Eastern Atlhetic Conference lead eluded Bethune-Cookman Saturday as Delaware State upset the Wildcats 16-13 at Alumni Stadium.
Thomas Bertrand-Holland rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown as the Hornets (2-8 overall, 1-6 MEAC) kept the Wildcats (6-3,4-2) from taking over first place after North Carolina A&T was also upset
22-16 by Morgan State. B-CU and North Carolina A&T face each other next week in Greensboro, N.C.
Tydarius Peters' 25-yard interception return brought the Wildcats back to three points with 13:09 remaining.
The Wildcat defense contained the Hornets, but the offense came up empty on both its fourth quarter possession.
Delaware State capitalized on early BCU miscues to take a 16-0 lead in the second quarter. The first Hornet touchdown came after a fumbled punt, then a safety resulted after an interception gave Delaware State the ball in the red zone.Â
BCU only converted one of its red zone opportunities when
LaDerrien Wilson scored on a one-yard run with 2:48 remaining in the third quarter.
Akevious Williams rushed for 46 yards on 15 carries while completing 14 of 28 passes for 138 yards.
Marcus Riley caught four passes for 32 yards and also had a 40-yard end around. Darryl Powell and
Jimmie Robinson each had three catches for 45 and 17 yards, respectively.
Untareo Johnson's ten tackles led the Wildcat defense.
HEAD COACH TERRY SIMS
"Honestly, the first half was terrible football by us. We gave ground when we shouldn't have, offensively we couldn't get anything going and we turned the ball over on special teams. You can't win when all that happens."
"We didn't take care of the football ....we tackled well at time, but let Delaware State move the ball and we played soft on third down."
"Delaware State stayed constant. They were a good, solid football team today."
"North Carolina A&T lost, we lost, too. South Carolina's in the driver's seat now."
"We lost too. South Carolina State's in the driver's seat now."
NOTES: BCU has now lost two straight games in which it didn't give up any points in the second half ...
Jimmie Robinson has now caught a pass in all nine games ... This was Delaware State's first win in the series since 2008.Â
