When two teams are separated by only 24 miles, it's assured that the rivalry will be a good one, full of legendary coaches, players and games.
Bethune-Cookman and Stetson meet for the 33rd time Tuesday. The series has featured two of the game's most respected coaches in Stetson's Dr. Glenn Wilkes and Bethune-Cookman's Jack "Cy" McClairen – both of whom have their school's home courts named after them, as well as historical games.
Here's a list of the top games of the series as named by BCUathletics.com. It might be slightly different from the one our colleagues would have on GoHatters.com, which is perfectly understandable.
DECEMBER 14, 1968 – The teams made history when they first met in the DeLand Armory. This was the first integrated intercollegiate basketball game in Volusia County. Stetson won 89-87, when a last-second B-CU basket was waved off. The late Johnnie "Gator" Allen scored 32 for the Wildcats, despite only playing 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
FEBRUARY 3, 1982 – The Wildcats' first win in the series was an 82-76 decision that the legendary "Cy" McClairen said was "our best win ever" according to Lydia Hinshaw of the Daytona Beach News-Journal's on-site accounting of the game. Jarvis Smith scored 30 points as the Wildcats took the lead with 8:11 remaining, then went into a stall (no shot clock back then) and finished the game 20 of 25 from the line.
NOVEMBER 25, 1991 – This was a case of the Wildcats winning the battle, but losing the war. Reggie Cunningham, who briefly led the nation in scoring, outdueled Stetson's Mark Brisker, 46-41 in an amazing individual scoring output from both parts. However, the rest of the Hatters did their part as Stetson cruised to an easy 106-85 victory. Cunningham was elected as the first African-American Property Appraiser in his home Gadsden County (Fla.).
NOVEMBER 16, 2010 – Given that his two bigs were in street clothes, Head Coach Clifford Reed would have been happy if his team stayed within six or seven rebounds of a bigger, more physical Stetson team. So, how do you think Reed felt when he looked at the stat sheet stating the Wildcats outrebounded the Hatters 38-37, and with B-CU outscoring Stetson, 78-66 for its first 2-0 start since 1999. Garrius Holloman's double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds led five B-CU players in double figures. The win set the tone for B-CU's first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season championship run.
DECEMBER 4, 2012 – BCU's biggest win in the series. Adrien Coleman made 13 of 14 from the field and scored 29 points as the Wildcats posted their best field goal percentage (63.5) since 2000. Javoris Bryant added a career-high 17 points, and Paul Scotland and Kevin Dukes added 15 and 13, respectfully, in the 86-63 win.
NOVEMBER 26, 2015 -- Two teams from the same county in Florida playing a neutral site game in Las Vegas? On Thanksgiving night? Makes perfect sense, right? That's what happened in Vegas when both teams were part of the Las Vegas Classic Field. Each team played at two away sites, then spent a weekend in Las Vegas as part of the eight-team field. Stetson held off a Wildcat charge for an 83-70 decision.Â
FEBRUARY 23, 2016 –Â
Jordan Potts scored 27 points, including a go-ahead 4-point play with 13 seconds left as Bethune-Cookman claimed a 96-94 instant classic overtime win. After giving the Wildcats their first lead in the overtime at 92-91, Potts sank four free throws after Stetson was called for an illegal screen and received a technical foul. The Hatters got a Grant Lozoya three-pointer at the buzzer to conclude the scoring.
Randy Holmes scored a career-high 19 points off the bench, and
Mario Moody claimed a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Bethune-Cookman had a chance to clinch the game in regulation, but Stetson was able to force overtime on a Lozoya three-pointer with under a second remaining that made it 85-all.
