DURHAM, N.C. – Zach Spivey's two-run homer, his second tater of the series finale, in the 11
th lifted Bethune-Cookman to a doubleheader split against North Carolina Central Saturday at the Durham Athletic Park.
BCU (15-27, 8-10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) won the series finale by an 8-5 score in 11 innings thanks to the centerfielder's blast, and reliever
Tyler Krull picked up his first victory on the spring with four shutout frames.
Game Two
NCCU (18-20, 9-8) took the first game of the twin bill by a 7-2 count.
Anthony Maldonado (2-4) struck out eight over 5.2 innings but allowed five earned runs off five hits and three walks.
Brandon Wilkes had two of the Wildcats' five hits, including a two-run dinger in the seventh.
Game Three
In a game that was scheduled for only seven innings, the Wildcats emerged with an 11-inning victory to stave off a series sweep. BCU totaled 11 hits, with Spivey being one of four with a two-hit game, but his 3 RBI led the scoring.
Spivey was clutch in more than just the extra-inning longball. In the bottom of the ninth, he made a sensational throw to catcher
Chase DeBonis to preserve a 5-5 tie. In the fifth, the senior launched a solo home run to give BCU then a 4-3 lead.
Starter
Brady Norris allowed only three earned runs, five total, over his six innings. The righty allowed six hits, three walks, and had four strikeouts. After
Jordan Pinto pitched a scoreless seventh, Krull (1-5) came in to give up only two hits, no walks, and added a pair of punchouts in his four innings.
BCU returns to the Sunshine State with a 3 p.m. first pitch Tuesday at UCF.
