SAVANNAH, Ga. – Bethune-Cookman moved one step closer to securing a spot in the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference baseball tournament with a 6-2 win against Savannah State Thursday at Tiger Field.
The Wildcats collected 10 hits, led by
Joseph Fernando's 3-5 evening.
With the victory, the Wildcats now need to win one of their final two games to clinch the MEAC South's No.3 seed.
BCU (17-36, 10-12) pulled away with three runs in the fourth inning.
Zach Spivey doubled down the right field line to plate Fernando and
Danny Rodriguez.
Brady Van Hook later scored Spivey on his RBI single.
Starter
Anthony Maldonado (4-5) recovered after allowing a two-run homer in the first off the bat of Joseph Roberson. He worked seven innings with six hits, two runs, a walk, and nine strikeouts.
Closer
Brandon Wilkes rolled with two scoreless innings. He finished with four strikeouts and ended the ninth with back-to-back looking.
Tiger (10-25-1) hurler Luis Torres-Lopez (1-6) lasted 7.2 innings and allowed five runs off eight hits, four walks, and two strikeouts.
BCU scored first with two across in the opening frame.
Over Torres did the honors with a two RBI double down the right field line.
The 'Cats added insurance in the eighth with a two-out RBI single from
Nate Sterijevski.
The series continues Friday at 1 p.m.
