BOCA RATON, Fla.  – It's kind of a given that it is not a good idea to spot an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent a big early lead.
Add a Big Sky opponent to that list after Bethune-Cookman (2-5) dropped 3-0 decisions to Boston College (25-17,25-20,25-12) and Southern Utah (25-12,25-15,25-17) at the Owls Classic Friday at Florida Atlantic.
Except for the second set against Southern Utah, BCU saw itself trailing early in each set and could never completely turn it around as its two-match winning streak was snapped. BCU made the first set against Boston College lively, turning a 5-0 deficit into leads of 6-5 and 9-7 before the Eagles pulled away.
"Even last week in the wins against Texas Southern, we fell behind early," said BCU Head Coach
Brittany Williams. "You can't give anyone anything, they have to earn it. Against teams like this, you find when you dig too deep a hole, you don't have enough time to get out.
"We're not a three-and-out team against anyone on our schedule, we have to step up," Williams added. "After everything that happened the last week, we're still trying to find ourselves and when we do, it will be amazing."
Jordan Jefferson had six kills against Boston College and nine against Southern Utah for the BCU team high each match.
Miranda White and
Sterling Williamson each had five kills against Boston College, with Williamson matching that total in the nightcap. White had a combined 13 digs on the day.
Shayla Eugene totaled 30 digs in two matches. Freshman
Julie Piedra, from nearby Deerfield Beach, saw extensive time on the defense as well.
"Miranda's getting back into a groove," Williams said. "Shayla's growing in her defense and it was good to see Julie come in. We had people get some experience. We're seeing some bright spots."
BCU meets Florida Atlantic Saturday at noon.
