MOBILE, Ala. – Prevailing in a tightly contested five-set match highlighted Bethune-Cookman's day at the South Alabama Invitational Friday. The Lady Wildcats outlasted Nicholls State 3-2 (24-26,25-17,27-25,21-21,17-15) before falling to the host Jaguars 3-0 (25-11,25-13,25-20).
Jordan Jefferson had 13 kills and matched a career-high with 25 digs, and freshman
Bailey Robinson registered her first career double-double (13 kills and 13 digs) as the Lady Wildcats (3-7) won their second five-setter of the season.
Setter
Ryleigh Taylor (32 assists, 13 digs) also double-doubled, and
Faith Landreneaux' nine blocks keyed a 15-4 BCU advantage in that category.
Shayla Eugene added 15 digs.
Nicholls State (6-3) erased an early 6-2 BCU lead in the fifth set and had match points at 14-13 and 15-14. A Landreneaux kill tied it at 15, then
Tynesha Adams put BCU ahead. An NSU attack error on match point gave BCU the victory.
Sterling Williamson added eight kills and Landreneaux seven as BCU recovered from dropping the first set by pulling away from a 14-14 tie and then an 18-16 lead with a 5-0 run to take the second set, then got
Jade Smith and Robinson kills to seal the third set after three six-point leads faded.
It was Jefferson's 36th career double-double.
Adams, an Alabama native, led BCU with four kills and three blocks against South Alabama. Eugene reached double figures in digs with 10.
BCU faces Louisiana Tech at 3 p.m. EST/2 p.m. CST Saturday.
