DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman's midweek struggles continued Wednesday as Stetson used a powerful Chris Gonzalez pitching performance to take a 5-0 victory in the Volusia County rivalry game at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Gonzalez struck out 13 as the Hatters (9-2) kept the Wildcats (5-8) winless on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so far this season.
Three of Stetson's five runs were unearned and spoiled a solid six-inning effort from freshman
Nolan Santos, who gave up four hits and two walks while striking out one. He slipped to 0-2.
Knickolas Billings and
Carlos Lequerica each worked a scoreless inning in relief.
BCU threatened in the second when
Boris Pena walked and advanced to third on
Enrique Porchas' single, but couldn't capitalize.
Josten Heron had BCU's other two hits on a fourth inning leadoff double and a ninth inning single.
The Wildcats hit the road for the first time this season with a three-game series at Texas State beginning Friday.
