DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Ciara Thompson hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Bethune-Cookman a 66-64 Senior Day win over rival Florida A&M Thursday evening in historic Moore Gymnasium.
Florida A&M erased a 64-56 deficit and tied the game when Shalaunda Burney-Robinson hit two free throws with 37 seconds, but the Rattlers went the last 1:16 without a field goal and missed both free throw attempts in the last 10 seconds.
Thompson grabbed the rebound and connected from the left baseline as time expired. Officials upheld the shot after a lengthy review to set up Thompson's game-winner.
Daniella Hatcher led four Wildcats (23-5, 15-1 MEAC) in double figures with 15 points, while
Amaya Scott and
Ashanti Hunt each added 11 points; Hunt also had a team-high 10 rebounds. Thompson came off the bench to score 10.
Burney-Robinson led FAMU (6-21, 4-12 MEAC) with 26 points and 17 rebounds.
Senior Day saw
Armani Walker surprised by her sister an USAF Airman First Class, during pregame ceremonies and recognized by the BCU football team for concluding her career undefeated against the Rattlers. This was the Lady Wildcats' ninth straight win in the rivalry.
Hunt registered her 1,000
th career point on a lay-up with 9:04 remaining in the third quarter.
BCU won its 15
th straight, the longest winning streak in school history.
BCU will open MEAC tournament play in Norfolk, Va., on noon Wednesday.
