DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman remained winless on the 2021 campaign Saturday, as Praire View A&M posted a 35-29 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory before a Daytona Stadium crowd of 3,267 Saturday afternoon.
A blocked field goal return for a touchdown and a pick six in the second helped the Panthers (5-1 overall, 4-0) maintain control and hand the Wildcats (0-7,0-4) their seventh consecutive defeat.
Bethune-Cookman made it a one-score game twice in the second half, the last on Cameron Overton's 16-yarder from
Devin Black with 3:57 remaining.
Earlier, the Wildcats made it 28-22 on
Jimmie Robinson III's 9-yard third quarter run set up by a 34-yard Que'Shaun Byrd breakaway.
Spoiled in the defeat was a season-high 176 yard game from Byrd. This was his third 100-yard game of the year.
Two long Jawon Pass touchdowns gave the Panthers a 14-8 halftime lead.
He hit Trejon Speller for a 63-yard strike with 8:11 remaining the first quarter and Jalon Howard 1:50 before halftime
Kemari Averett scored B-CU's first touchdown on a 26-yarder from
Devin Black 45 seconds into the second quarter. On the two-point conversion,
Shannon Patrick connected
with kicker Dylan Moghanddam on a pass that gave the Wildcats an 8-7 lead.
B-CU's defense denied a pair of PVAMU red zone chances, with De'Vuntray Hampton and
Malik Franklin recovered fumbles into the Panther 10-yard line to end scoring
threats.
The Wildcats had a chance to take the lead before halftime, moving to the PVAMU 2 but a fourth down pass fell incomplete.
Black finished 11 of 18 for 202 yards with two touchdown passes. Averett had 115 yards on six catches as he posted his fifth consecutive game with a score.
Untareo Johnson paced the defense with nine tackles. B-CU outgained PVAMU 498-422.
B-CU travels to Mississippi to face Jackson State next Saturday.
HEAD COACH TERRY SIMS
"Not to take away anything from PVAMU, but we made mistakes that cost us points and put them in position to score. You can't do that and expect to win. We missed red zone points. That is not us."
"This is something I've never been through. We have to play one play at time and not get ahead of ourselves. We have to play four quarters. We have to play hard every snap
on the field."
QUE'SHAUN BYRD
"I have to give all to the line. They gave me a lot of opportunities."
