Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Wildcats stranded 18 men on base, including the bases loaded three times, as Florida A&M finished off the series sweep in 13 innings, Sunday afternoon at Bethune Point.
How It Happened
The Wildcats (13-18, 7-5 SWAC) loaded the bases in the first inning, but a strikeout left three runners stranded.
Boris Peña put the Wildcats in front, 1-0, in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer over the wall in left – his team-leading fourth of the season.
Florida A&M (15-18, 9-3 SWAC) took the lead in the next half inning with three straight two-out base hits that made it 2-1.
Things were quiet until the bottom of the eighth, when B-CU tied the game at 2-2 with a double steal and an error that allowed
Brian Perez to cross the plate.
The Wildcats again loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but could not push a run across, and the game went to extras.
FAMU threatened in the top of the tenth with a two-out double and a walk. The runner advanced to third on a wild pitch to put runners at the corners, but
Brenton Fisher got a strikeout looking to preserve the tie.
The bottom of the tenth saw the Wildcats again load the bases, and again come up empty.
FAMU took the lead for good in the 13
th with three runs on four hits to make it 6-2.
B-CU showed signs of life in the bottom half of the inning as
Irvin Escobar drove in
Franki Febles to make it 6-3, and the Wildcats would once again load the bases, but that was all for the home team.
"We can't lose perspective of what our goal is," Wildcats head coach
Jonathan Hernandez said after the game. "We're going to get better, and we'll do what we need to do to get better. We take some positives from today and we go from there."
Hector Vazquez started and threw five and a third innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
Joan Gonzalez took over for Vazquez in the sixth, forcing a double play ball on the first pitch he threw. He provided 4.1 strong innings in relief, allowing only two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Brenton Fisher took the loss despite a solid three innings in relief. He allowed four runs in the thirteenth inning, all earned, on seven hits and five strikeouts.
