Wildcats Drop Regular Season Finale

Delahoussaye nets nine kills in loss to FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Mia Delahoussaye registered nine kills Friday evening as Bethune-Cookman Volleyball fell away to Florida A&M, 3-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season finale for both teams at Al Lawson Center. FAMU collected the win on scores of 25-18, 25-19, 26-28 and 25-17.

After falling behind 2-0 in the match, Bethune-Cookman (7-20, 7-9 SWAC) rallied to gather an extra-time 28-26 win in the third set.

The Cats ran out to an early 5-2 advantage behind a pair of attack errors charged to Florida A&M (16-13, 12-2 SWAC). The Rattlers would counter with kills from Brooke Hudson and Brooke Lynn Watts to turn an 8-0 run into a 10-5 advantage. Trailing 14-10, BCU tallied kills from Elizabeth Phillips and AJ Simmons to begin a run that tied the set at 14-all.

After FAMU stepped ahead 22-18 on the heels of a Watts kill, the Wildcats' Jasmine Moore and Mia Delahoussaye placed kills off the set of Madison Coates. The Rattlers had match-point at 24-21 when Milana Thornton put down a kill along the back line. However, another Delahoussaye kill and a service ace from Sydni Poston tied the set at 24-24, setting the stage for Delahoussaye to record a block and give the visitors a 25-24 lead in the third frame. BCU would gather the win on back-to-back points stemming from a Delahoussaye kill and a hitting error charged to the Rattlers.

Despite recording 12 kills in the fourth set, it would be three ballhandling errors to plague the Wildcats, allowing the Rattlers to take the 25-17 win in order to close the set and match.

FAMU was led on the night by Watts with 11 kills, followed by Lyonnie Sanford with eight. Camila De La Rosa posted 33 assists, and teammate Hudson finished the night with a match-high tying 27 digs.

BCU used Delahoussaye's nine kills, as well as Simmons with seven kills of her own on the night. Coates finished with a team-high 17 assists, while Alisha Callender had 15. Essence Bell collected a match-high tying 27 digs in the match.

The Cats have already qualified for next week's SWAC Tournament in Prairie View, Texas, but await further league scores to see where they will be seeded for the tournament. The SWAC Tournament begins Friday, November 17, on the campus of Prairie View A&M.
