Women’s Basketball Falls Short to Jackson State

Wildcats see five-game winning streak snapped

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Jackson State had three players reach double figures scoring on Monday evening, as Bethune-Cookman fell to the visiting Tigers 77-52 at Moore Gymnasium in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women's Basketball contest.

Bethune-Cookman (10-13, 9-4 SWAC) shot 44 percent from the field in the opening quarter, stunning the visiting Tigers and holding a 17-16 advantage after a quarter of play. Nia Jordan scored four of her six points on the night in the opening period for the Wildcats, while Cameraah Langston came off the bench for six points in the opener.

However, the second quarter would belong to Jackson State (15-8, 12-1 SWAC) as the Tigers held the Wildcats to just a 14.3 percent shooting mark from the field, while scoring 20 points and shooting 44.4 percent from the floor as a unit themselves.

JSU would limit BCU to another nine-point quarter in the third, as they themselves poured in 21 points.

Jariyah Covington led the visitors with nine points in the third quarter, followed by Liz Martino with four. For BCU, it was a three-point play from D'Shantae Edwards that topped the Cats in scoring coming back after the half.

Entering the game as the top team in the SWAC, JSU finished the game with 46 points in the paint, compared to BCU's 20, as the Tigers used a sizeable height difference in the post on the evening.

Covington led all scorers in the game with 17 points, followed closely by Ti'lan Boler (16) and Daphane White (13). The Tigers also had 18 assists as a team on their 32 made field goals throughout the contest.

BCU was led in scoring by Kayla White with eight points and two assists. Edwards turned in seven points, while Jordan matched Kayla Clark with six points each.

The Wildcats travel to Alabama A&M on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. CT, as the Maroon and Gold seek to lock up a spot in this year's SWAC Tournament with a victory.
