MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State engineered a four-run ninth inning to stun the Wildcats and sweep the weekend series, Sunday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala.
Alabama State (27-14 14-3 SWAC) scored first in the contest after an RBI single in the third.
The Wildcats (20-18, 11-5 SWAC) took the lead a half-inning later. B-CU loaded the bases and plated two on a sacrifice fly by
Brian Perez and an RBI single from
Luis Tuero.
Another sacrifice fly, this time by
Robert Moya made it 3-1 in the top of the fifth
B-CU chipped in two more in the seventh on an two-run homer by
Irvin Escobar - his second of the weekend.
Alabama State grabbed one back in the eighth on a solo shot to make it 5-2.
Disaster struck B-CU in the bottom of the ninth, as the Hornets rallied to score four two-out runs, walking off the Wildcats on an RBI single through the left side of the infield that ended things at 6-5.
Daniel Gaviria made the start. He was excellent, allowing only one run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Louis Lipthratt took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout in 1.2 innings.
Derrius York also appeared for B-CU.
- Irvin Escobar finished the day 2-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk.
- The Wildcats left 10 men on base.
- B-CU struck out only four times as a team.
For the first time this season, there will be no midweek contest for the Wildcats, who will take a breather before looking to return to form next weekend at Jackson State. First pitch of the three-game set is set for Friday, April 28 at 7 p.m.
