DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - One swing erased a night of Wildcats struggles as
Robert Moya's mammoth home run was the difference in a 5-3, walkoff win, Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The Wildcats (29-23, 20-7 SWAC) nearly scored first, but
Colton Olasin was gunned down attempting to score on a
Luis Tuero single to center field in the bottom of the third.Â
Jackson State (27-23, 12-17 SWAC) put runners aboard in all but one inning Friday night, including putting the leadoff runner on in six of nine innings. The Tigers crossed the plate first with a pair of runs courtesy of a Wildcat throwing error that made it 2-0.Â
The Tigers added another unearned run an inning later on a bunt that made it 3-0, JSU.
The Wildcats entered the bottom of the eighth still scoreless, but singles from
Garrett Chun and Boris Pena put runners aboard for
Manny Souffrain. His single to center scored Chun to put the Cats on the board.
A batter later,
Irvin Escobar flared a ball into right that allowed Pena to score to make it 3-2, JSU. Olasin loaded the bases again with a single up the middle, but a flyout ended the threat for B-CU
The ninth inning began with a groundout and a base hit from Chun. With two outs, Pena was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for
Robert Moya.
Malik Stephens came in to pinch run at first.
Robert Moya, who was 0-4 on the night including a double play, took to the plate and quickly went down 0-2 in the count. The Wildcat slugger worked his way back to a full count before driving a ball deep over the manual scoreboard in left-center field, and the Wildcats walked off the Tigers, 5-3.Â
Â
Daniel Gaviria made the start for B-CU. He tossed 5.1 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits with three walks and three stirkeouts.Â
Pablo Torres got the win, his second of the season. He allowed only one hit and a walk with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings.Â
- With the win, the Wildcats clinch the No. 2 seed in the SWAC East. They will take on the No. 3 seed from the West at Noon EST, Wednesday May 24 in Atlanta.
- Friday marks the third walk-off win of the season for B-CU. They walked-off back-to-back games against Longwood in the first series of the season.
The season finale is set for a 1 p.m. start, Sunday. The Wildcats will honor five graduating seniors prior to the game.
