Bethune-Cookman Closes Out Bash at the Beach

Hightower, Moore honored to all-tournament team

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman's Jasmine Moore recorded six kills and three blocks Saturday afternoon, but it would be Marshall coming away with a 3-0 win over the Wildcats in volleyball action taking place on the final day of the Bash at the Beach hosted by BCU at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium. The Thundering Herd grabbed the win on scores of 25-18, 25-11 and 25-13.

Bethune-Cookman (0-3) raced out to a 15-11 lead midway through the first set.

Jasmine Moore (Baytown, Texas) picked up three of her six kills in the match during the opening frame for the Wildcats. She also combined with Niara Hightower (Wichita Falls, Texas) for a block – as each player also amassed a solo block apiece in the set.

But it would be Marshall (2-1) setter Brynn Brown collecting four kills and setting up seven assists in the rally that saw the visiting Thundering Herd finish the set on a 14-3 run, sparked primarily off the serve of Sarah Wadsworth. Combined with Brown's kills, Marshall used two unforced errors by the Wildcats and a service error to pick up the opening frame win.

The Cats tallied their lowest hitting percentage of the day in the second set, as BCU accounted for just three kills and six errors on 22 swings. Meanwhile, Marshall countered with Essence Clerkley and Lydia Montague combining for seven kills – added a pair of solo blocks by the latter, to earn the 25-11 set win.

The Thundering Herd hit .267 in the frame.

Chloe Conover (Lubbock, Texas) had three kills on 10 attempts for Bethune-Cookman in the third set.

However, attack errors proved costly once again for the Wildcats as they registered six in the frame.

Kylee Stokes and Wadsworth tallied three kills each for the Thundering Herd in helping push them to the 25-13 win.

Marshall was led by Brown with seven kills and 24 assists. Montague had seven kills of her own with five blocks (three assisted). The defense was headlined by Wadsworth and Bria Samilton with a match-high tying 10 digs each.

For BCU, it was Moore finishing the match with a team-high six kills, four digs and three blocks. Conover had five kills. And it was Madison Coates (Oviedo, Fla.) leading the team with nine assists and six digs. Sydni Poston (Chicago, Ill.) also added five digs as a defensive specialist.

For BCU, it was Hightower and Moore each earning a spot on the Bash at the Beach All-Tournament Team, respectfully. Joining them on the team were each of the following: Jazminn Parrish (Marshall), Lydia Montague (Marshall), Ali Ruffin (The Citadel) and Belle Hogan (The Citadel).

The Cats return to action Friday, Sept. 1, when traveling to compete in the Pirate Invitational hosted by East Carolina in Greenville, North Carolina. The Cats are joined by teams from Appalachian State, Campbell and the host Pirates of ECU.
