GREENVILLE, N.C. – Delanie Grevengoed registered 11 kills in guiding Appalachian State to a 3-0 win over Bethune-Cookman Volleyball in the opening match for both teams Friday morning in the Pirate Invitational hosted by East Carolina at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. App State took the match with scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-16.
Â
Playing in her first match of the season, Preseason Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) all-conference selection
Alisha Callender (Dorado, P.R.) put up three assists in the opening set for Bethune-Cookman (0-4), adding four digs as well. The trio of
Mia Delahoussaye (West Covina, Calif.),
Malina Spencer (Kissimmee, Fla.) and
Jasmine Moore (Baytown, Texas) each recorded two kills in the frame for the Wildcats.
Â
But it would be App State's Kenady Roper on-serve for four points in helping the Mountaineers to an early 7-1 advantage – one in which the Wildcats could not battle back. App State eventually claimed the set on a score of 25-11.
Â
The second set saw Spencer tally three kills, while teammate
AJ Simmons (Miami, Fla.) dropped in a pair of kills on just three swings to hit at a .667 clip in the frame.
Â
App State (4-0) countered with three kills apiece from Lulu Ambrose, McCall Denny and Delanie Grevengoed to earn the 25-17 set win.
Â
Chloe Conover (Lubbock, Texas) tacked on three kills for Head Coach Brittany Williams and the Wildcats.
Ktyal Price (Robbinsdale, Minn.), a redshirt junior middle blocker for the Cats, put up two kills on four attacks and placed down two assisted blocks in the set.
Â
The Mountaineers were paced in the match by Grevengoed with her match-high 11 kills and .647 hitting percentage. Ambrose added eight kills. And it was the pair of Maya Winterhoff and Denny adding seven kills each, with the latter producing six digs and two block assists. Roper picked up 10 digs from her libero position. Katie Cruise led her side with 22 assists.
Â
For Bethune-Cookman, it was Spencer leading the charge with five kills, followed by Moore with four. Callender provided her side with nine assists and seven digs. And the Cats turned to Price with two blocks.
