Fifty years ago, Bethune-Cookman Football established itself as the team to beat in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) with a convincing 12-6 victory over Alabama A&M.
Â
It was another impressive defensive performance by the Wildcats, who contained future Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Fame performer John Stallworth in a brutal, physical game in front of 5,200 at Welch Memorial Stadium in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Â
The hero of the of the game for B-CC was Frank Patterson, who pounced on a fumble at the Wildcats'Â 10 yard line with 27 seconds remaining to preserve the victory.
Â
Offensively, Willie Collins, in his third game at quarterback after being converted from tight end, ran for a touchdown and threw for another to Bernard Coleman, as the Wildcats took a 12-0 lead in the rain.
Â
The game saw the return of Randy "Sweet Back" Walker to the B-CC lineup, and he rushed for 175 yards and caught one pass for eight additional yards.
Â
Now 3-0, B-CC would get ready to face Albany State in a huge contest the following week in Jacksonville, Florida.
