Volleyball Falls in SWAC Play to Jackson State

Cats fall in four-set thriller at home

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Mia Delahoussaye and Jasmine Moore produced nine kills each Friday evening as Bethune-Cookman Volleyball fell at home to Jackson State, 3-1 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match inside Richard V. Moore Gymnasium. Jackson State collected the match on scores of 25-20, 25-20, 15-25, 25-21.

Trailing 2-0 in the match, Bethune-Cookman (1-13, 1-2 SWAC) registered a .360 hitting performance as a team in the third set, using the services of freshman outside hitter Mia Delahoussaye with four of her nine kills on the night coming as part of that third frame rally. Behind the serve of sophomore defensive specialist/libero Rylee Davis, the Wildcats jumped out to an early 4-1 lead.

Alexis Williams would singlehandedly bring Jackson State (6-6, 2-0 SWAC) back into the set at 10-9, following one of her five kills in the period – this one coming off the set of Naija Gadis. A kill from Nyjha Marcelin tied the set at 11-all for the Tigers, before a service error and an attack error – one of a match-high 12 in the frame for the visitors, put BCU back out to a 13-11 advantage.

With Madison Coates on serve for the Wildcats, BCU was gifted two additional JSU attack errors to stretch the lead at 15-12, followed immediately by an AJ Simmons kill and blocks from Simmons and teammate Ktyal Price.

BCU led 18-14 when another 3-0 burst for the Maroon and Gold was aided by two Tigers swings that landed out of play, and were capped off by another Simmons/Price block combination at the net. The Cats would go on to claim the 25-15 set win off Delahoussaye's bookending kills combined with a Simmons shot down the line.

In the fourth set, JSU's Hope Briggs placed two kills, while three attacks by the Cats sailed wide of the line, pushing the Tigers out to a 6-1 lead in the frame. Niara Hightower and Jasmine Moore went back-to-back for Maroon and Gold kills midway through the set, as the hosts pulled to within 13-10. But it would be blocks from Jordan Jones and Marcelin, followed by a Jones kill, allowing JSU an 18-13 advantage late-on.

After BCU pulled to within 20-16 off a JSU service error, the Tigers used four unforced errors from the Cats down the stretch to grab the match-clinching 25-21 set victory. During the stretch, BCU's Delahoussaye and Moore recorded kills, while Hightower and Moore combined for a block.

JSU hit at a match-high .314 clip as a team in the opening set, placing 17 kills off 35 swings against six errors in the set en route to the 25-20 win. The Wildcats were limited to just six kills on 31 attempts and six errors in the second set, falling in the frame by a 25-20 score line.

JSU was led on the night by three players in double-figures for kills, headlined by Briggs and Williams with 13 apiece. Marcelin added 10 kills and 14 digs for her double-double, while Williams tallied 11 digs for her double-double outing as well. Gadis led the Tigers with 24 assists. And it was Trinity Bryant supplying a match-high 16 digs on the night.

BCU was led offensively by Moore and Delahoussaye with nine kills. Essence Bell delivered a team-high 14 digs, followed by Davis with 10. Alisha Callender posted 21 assists, while Oviedo, Florida native Coates added 13 of her own in the two-setter system. Meanwhile, Hightower delivered a career-high matching six blocks (assisted).

Bethune-Cookman hosts Mississippi Valley State on Sunday at noon back inside Moore Gymnasium.
