Tennis Fights Hard Against Stetson

Wildcats drop decision to Hatters

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Women's Tennis suffered a 7-0 decision to cross-county opponent Stetson on Tuesday morning at Derbyshire Park.

Bethune-Cookman (0-2) dropped both doubles courts to allow Stetson an early 1-0 advantage in the match.

The Wildcats' team of Jalayah Shaw and Allexii Bassette took three games from the Stetson (1-1) duo of Magdalena Hedrzak and Nadejda Maslova at the No. 1 position. The Wildcats pair eventually fell on the day, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, the Hatters' Pilar Astigarraga and Zali Morris defeated BCU's Janet Imbo Nloga and Loncey Elie, 6-0.

In singles play, an exciting match ensued on the No. 2 court as Janet Imbo Nloga took on the Hatters' Zali Morris. The two went toe-to-toe until Morris finally walked away with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Another great match took place at the top-flight singles spot with Stetson's Maslova defeating BCU's Jalayah Shaw in straight sets (6-3, 6-1). Shaw took a 3-2 lead in the opening set until Maslova's break at 3-3 pushed her in front for good.

Clelia Lombardi of Stetson claimed a 6-3, 3-0 decision at the No. 3 position after Bethune-Cookman's Allexii Bassette was forced to retire.

No. 4 singles play witnessed Cleanne Pickel fight past Loncey Elie in straight sets (6-2, 6-0), as the Greenacres, Florida native took two games in the opener for the Maroon and Gold.

The No. 5 singles point was collected by Stetson's Maxence Lippens courtesy a straight-set decision (6-0, 6-0).

The Hatters picked up an early point at the No. 6 position with a default victory in earning Magdalena Hedrzak the point.

Bethune-Cookman returns to the courts Thursday, Feb. 1, when the Wildcats play host to Wofford at Derbyshire Park.
