B-CU Drops Opener to Eagles

Gonzalez Febo homers again, but bullpen can't hold on in loss

FORT MYERS, Fla.- FGCU and Bethune-Cookman scored in six of nine innings combined, but an eighth-inning RBI single was the difference as the Eagles held on for a 5-4 win, Friday night in Fort Myers.

Header How it Happened

FGCU (1-4, 0-0 ASUN) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as an RBI single by Jacob Lojewski gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

The Wildcats (3-2, 0-0 SWAC) quickly responded, as Jose Gonzalez scored Jose Gonzalez Febo with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to tie things at 1-1.

B-CU took its first lead of the night in the fourth, again off the bat of Gonzalez who drove in Manny Souffrain to make it 2-1 on an RBI single to right field.

FGCU tied things again aa half-inning later as Dalton Robinson doubled to score another run. The next inning, a sacrifice fly put FGCU in front again, 3-2.

A single, walk, and hit batter loaded the bases for B-CU in the seventh before pinch hitter Peter Vazquez tied things yet again with a sacrifice fly that scored Gonzalez. A fielder's choice ended any further threat from B-CU.

The Eagles jumped in front in the next half inning with another RBI single that made it 4-3 before Gonzalez Febo shot a no-doubter over the left field wall to tie things at 4-all.
