ORLANDO –
Jalayah Shaw registered a set victory in her match Sunday afternoon, but it was not enough as Bethune-Cookman Women's Tennis fell away to UCF by a 4-0 score at USTA National Campus.
Bethune-Cookman (0-10) did not compete in doubles against the Knights.
UCF (3-5), entering at No. 59 nationally in the latest ITA poll, grabbed the opening point courtesy a 6-0, 6-0 decision at the No. 4 position with the Knights' Anique Kattenberg defeated Loncey Elie.
BCU's
Jalayah Shaw enjoyed the most exciting match of the day. 3. Shaw opened the No. 3 singles match with a 6-2 win in the opening set, before dropping the second set on a 6-0 line to UCF's Mihaela Tsoneva. However, the freshman from Plant City, Florida was forced to retire with her body cramping up midway through the third and decisive set.
"Jalayah [Shaw] splitting sets was a huge positive on the day," remarked Head Coach Chris Wollett. "Going up 2-0 in the third set with cramps setting in was heartbreaking to see, though. She competed her hardest, but unfortunately her body would not allow her to complete the task.
"All-in-all, it was one of her best singles matches of the season, and she was so close to having her breakthrough match in collegiate tennis."
In No. 2 action, freshman
Tuhina Sambhus continued to improve, as she collected three games from UCF's Noel Saidenova. In the end, the New Zealand native ended up falling in straight sets (6-1, 6-2).
And at No. 1 singles,
Janet Imbo Nloga dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match to UCF's Olivia Lincer.
"For going up against a Top 75 team in the country, I was very happy with how the team competed," added Wollett. "UCF is one of those teams that does not give you an opening, and they play very aggressive."
Bethune-Cookman hosts College of Charleston to Derbyshire Park on Saturday, March 2, at 11 a.m.
