Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Bethune-Cookman Downs Grambling State, 4-0

Wildcats post second win in as many days

MADISON, Miss. – Bethune-Cookman made it two wins in as many days Monday afternoon as Women's Tennis claimed a 4-0 win over Grambling State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match played at FitNetwork USA – Cypress Lake Facility. Bethune-Cookman finishes the SWAC Pod #2 event with a 2-1 record.

For the second consecutive day, Bethune-Cookman (2-14, 2-6 SWAC) grabbed the early lead with the all-important doubles point.

"Number two doubles played some of the best, aggressive tennis all season and got the job done quickly to secure the doubles point," said an excited Chris Wollett, BCU Head Coach.

The Wildcats earned a default win at No. 3 doubles before the team of Jalayah Shaw and Allexii Bassette took a 6-2 win from Grambling State's duo of Takudzwa Mawisire and Ekaterina Dziova on court two.

In singles play, it was Courdeja Clark taking a default win at the No. 6 position to put the Maroon and Gold up 2-0.

Keona Burley posted a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set win over Grambling State's Leah Bryant at the No. 5 singles position. The match was later secured for the Cats with Tuhina Sambhus' 6-3, 6-0 score line over Jovana Latinovic on court three.

Janet Imbo Nloga dropped her opening set at No. 1 singles but was leading 4-3 in the second set before it was halted. Jalayah Shaw captured her opening set 6-3 and led 4-1 in the second. And it was Allexii Bassette leading on court four 6-3, 4-4 before play stopped.

"Collectively, that was a great team win today," continued Wollett. "In singles, the team competed well and played within their range to take the lead on most courts almost immediately. After Janet [Imbo Nloga] was down in the first, she was fighting hard having the lead in the second.

"Allexii [Bassette] and Jalayah [Shaw] were in control when we had to stop, but great job by Keona [Burley] and Tuhina [Sambhus] to close out their matches to secure the victory."

The Wildcats return home to host IUPUI on Thursday, March 14, at 11 a.m. The match will take place at Derbyshire Park in Daytona Beach.
