DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Wildcats swiped ten bags on the way to a 6-2 win over Alabama A&M, Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark .
AAMU (3-22, 1-7 SWAC) took a first-inning lead for the second time in as many nights, scoring a pair on a two-out double and RBI single that made it 2-0.
Wildcats (14-11, 6-1 SWAC) took those runs right back in the bottom of the first as Sergio River singled, stole second, and stole third before walks from
Garrett Chun and
Jose Gonzalez loaded the bases with no one out.
The first out of the inning scored a run as
Manny Souffrain made it 2-1 on a sacrifice fly. Chun came around to score a batter later thanks to B-CU's double-steal play that allowed Gonzalez to advance while also tying the game at 2-2.
B-CU took the lead an inning later as
Jose Gonzalez brought home
Colton Olasin on a bases-loaded fielder's choice.
B-CU broke things open in the bottom of the third as a
Ramses Cordova walk set up a two-run homer over the batting cages in left field by
Jorge Rodriguez that made it 5-2.
The Wildcats stranded the bases loaded in consecutive innings in the fifth and sixth before finally adding insurance in the seventh on a Chun single to push the lead to 6-2. The Cats loaded the bases once again before a double-play ended the threat.
The B-CU bullpen took it from there as the Wildcats closed out the 6-2 win.
Marcos Gamboa took home his second win of the season after six innings in which he allowed only two runs - both earned - on four hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Dylan Vega earned his second win of the season after three innings in which he allowed just a hit with two strikeouts.
- 10 steals in a game is the most by a Wildcats team under Coach Hernandez, and the most by the team in a single game in at least 20 years.
- Jose Gonzalez extended hit on-base streak to 23 straight games after recording a hit and a walk.
- Jorge Rodriguez, Peter Vazquez, and Daniel Figueroa each enjoyed multi-hit nights. Rodriguez led B-CU with two RBI
- Only one Wildcat did record either a hit or a walk in the game.
- B-CU stranded 14 runners in the contest.
The series finale is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday, with B-CU looking to complete the series sweep behind starting pitcher
Daniel Gaviria.
