Cats Top Edward Waters in Jacksonville

BCU wins six singles matches

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman won all six singles points Friday afternoon, as the Wildcats defeated homestanding Edward Waters 6-1 at EWU Tennis Complex for nonconference women's tennis action.
 
Edward Waters (3-17) opened the match by claiming the doubles point.
 
At No. 1 doubles, Aalisha Alexis and Giulia Peres stopped Bethune-Cookman's duo of Janet Imbo Nloga and Tuhina Sambhus, 6-2. Sophia Paffrath and Lara Viehrig teamed to defeat BCU's No. 2 doubles team of Jalayah Shaw and Allexii Bassette, 6-0.
 
Bethune-Cookman (3-15) did collect a doubles match at No. 3, as the duo of Keona Burley and Courdeja Clark took down the Tigers tandem of Nadja Dzetelovic and Katharina Weigl on a 6-2 decision.
 
In singles play, the Wildcats registered victories at all six positions to complete the comeback team victory.
 
Allexii Bassette kicked things off with a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 win from Weigl on court four. That was followed in kind by BCU's Tuhina Sambhus at No. 3 singles, with the freshman from New Zealand recording a 6-0, 6-0 win from EWU's Lara Viehrig.
 
BCU made it 3-1 on the day with Keona Burley's 6-0, 6-0 win on court five over Sophia Paffrath. Jalayah Shaw captured the next point for the Maroon and Gold with her 6-2, 6-1 straight-set win from Giulia Peres at the No. 2 position.
 
Courdeja Clark fought past EWU's Nadja Dzetelovic on court six with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 three-set thriller. And the singles sweep was completed with Janet Imbo Nloga's three-set- 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 10-8 win at the top flight over Aalisha Alexis.
 
Bethune-Cookman concludes the 2023-24 season Saturday when the Wildcats face off against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Florida.
