DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Women's Basketball has announced the addition of Asianae Nicholson and Shomari Phillips to the incoming class of 2024-25, with the news coming Thursday, June 27, by Head Coach
Janell Crayton. Both players arrive to the Wildcats program from the transfer portal, as both have previously played within the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
Asianae Nicholson, a rising junior from South Euclid, Ohio, played her first two seasons at Alabama A&M under former head coach Margaret Richards. Last season, she played in 22 games for the Bulldogs while making a start in seven games. The Brush High alum averaged 2.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, shooting 40.8 percent from the field overall from her forward position on the court.
"Asianae is going to be a great addition to our post player group," said Crayton, recently completing her third season at the helm in Daytona Beach. "We are excited to add her elite rebounding skills, as well as her ability to run the floor and protect the paint. She has SWAC experience which is very beneficial, and we know she is ready and willing to come in and help our team reach its goals."
Last season at AAMU, Nicholson poured in a season-high 10 points against both UAB and Tennessee Tech, respectively. She shot 5-of-8 from the field in a season-high performance against UAB in her first game of the campaign. Against Tennessee Tech, she would pull down a career-best 17 rebounds.
Shomari Phillips comes to Bethune-Cookman as a rising senior from Texas Southern by way of Indian River State College. Phillips spent her junior season at Texas Southern in the SWAC in 2023-24, seeing action in 29 games with nine starts. The guard from Winter Haven, Florida, amassed 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game with 14 steals and 11 assists. Prior to TXSO, Phillips played her first two seasons at Indian River State College where she saw action in 62 games across her freshman and sophomore years, respectfully, pouring in more than nine points per game and three rebounds.
"A Florida native and good shooter with a defensive mindset, Shomari is another exciting piece coming to our program for next season," stated Crayton. "Her ability to shoot from the outside and be a lockdown defender are two elements that really fit our style. We can't wait for her to come back closer to home. Her talent and work ethic will be invaluable, and we cannot wait to get started."
Against North American last season, Phillips poured in a season-high 17 points and shot 6-of-12 from the field, including a season-best four (4) three-pointers to go along with three steals. Against Alcorn State, she played a season-high 34 minutes.
