For the first time since 2018, Bethune-Cookman Football was victorious on Homecoming with a 31-14 win over Arkansas - Pine Bluff, Saturday evening at Daytona Municipal Stadium.
After a big return to open the game from
Javon Ross, the Wildcats were forced to punt at the UAPB 40.
UAPB avoided disaster after a near-fumble on its first drive of the game, but the Cats still forced a three-and-out.
B-CU finally broke through midway through the quarter as
Cam'Ron Ransom used some help from his offensive line for a tush-push touchdown to make it 7-0, Cats.
Both offenses continued to sputter, heading into the second quarter with no further scoring chances.
B-CU saw a spark on defense to open the second quarter as
Adrian Hall Jr. forced a UAPB fumble to give the Cats the ball near midfield, but B-CU could not turn it into points on the board.
As the B-CU offense remained stagnant, the Golden Lions blocked a B-CU punt deep in Wildcat territory, taking over at the two-yard-line before punching in a game-tying score to make it 7-7.
B-CU re-took the lead into the half on a 9-play, 65-yard drive culminating in a five-yard
Ali Scott Jr. touchdown on a run up the middle.
B-CU made it 21-7 midway through the third after a 27-yard UAPB punt gave the Cats the ball at UAPB 43. After a furious 22-yard rush by
Khamani Robinson, Ransom ran it in himself on a fake for the score from the two.
The Golden Lions did not fade away, as UAPB took just three plays to pull to within a score again as quarterback Christian peters found D'Avery Robinson for a 34-yard touchdown to make it 21-14, B-CU.
Bethune-Cookman worked some magic to move in front two scores again, drawing up a flea flicker for 53 yards to
Josh Evans before
Khamani Robinson got into the endzone to double up the Golden Lions at 28-14.
B-CU added some insurance with ten minutes to play as
Juan Dominguez sent the first field goal of the game through the uprights from 25 yards out to make it 31-14.
B-CU marched down the field again late in the quarter, but the Cats were unable to convert on a 4
th-and-one from the UAPB 2-yard-line. Fortunately for B-CU, it did not matter as the Cats Defense took it the rest of the way for the 31-14 win.
Under first-year head coach Terrell Buckley, Mississippi Valley State finds itself at the bottom of the SWAC East at 1-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Only Southern has fielded a worse season than the Delta Devils with an extra loss to their resume.
The lone win for MVSU came in a 49-0 rout of Lincoln (California) back on Oct. 18. The Delta Devils enter play Saturday off a 32-10 loss at then one-win Alcorn State a week ago.
Mississippi Valley State sits in the bottom three of the conference statistically both offensively and defensively, scoring under 20 points per game and allowing over 35.
The Delta Devils rank dead last in rushing offense, averaging just over 115 yards per game on the ground. They have fared slightly better throwing the ball, averaging 167 yards per game in the air.
Junior quarterback Josh Brown has been the primary starter for MVSU, completing 81 of 159 passes for 907 yards and five touchdowns to only two picks. His backup, senior Brandon Nunez, has been picked off four times on just 28 pass attempts.
Freshman running back Norman Taylor has led the way on the ground, rushing for over 4.5 yards per carry with three touchdowns.
Defensively, Mississippi Valley has been solid in the run game, giving up less than 150 yards per game on the ground - second to only Jackson State in the SWAC. Against the pass, they rank 10th in the league at 244 yards per game allowed and four picks to 18 passing touchdowns.
Graduate linebacker Jalen Wright leads the Delta Devils in tackles at 45 along with eight tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a pair of QB hurries.
WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE
With four straight wins at Daytona Stadium to start the 2025 season, the Wildcats have a chance to finish the year undefeated at home for the first time since the team finished a perfect 4-0 in 2017. B-CU has not gone undefeated at home in a five-game home season since 2015. A win Saturday would mark a six-game home winning streak for the program - the longest since B-CU won seven straight at home between the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
RUNNING WILD
The Wildcats have rushed for over 200 yards as a team with multiple rushing scores in four straight games dating back to September 27. Three of the previous four games have featued four rushing scores. B-CU rushed for 200 yards as a team just once in the 2024 season, and finished the season with only three games of multiple rushing scores.
BIG HUG
With four games left to play,
Maleek Huggins has already surpassed his own high-mark in receiving yards and touchdowns from a year ago with 640 yards and six scores on the year - more than any B-CU pass catcher since 2021, and the most by a Wide Reciver since Jawill Davis finished the 11-game 2015 season with 788 yards and six scores. Davis went on to sign with the New York Giants following the 2018 NFL draft.
HAVE A HOMECOMING!
Linebacker
Jaylen Lewis was named SWAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week after a career day that saw him finish his homecoming with four total tackles, none bigger than a pair of sacks for 21 total yards lost. In just Saturday's game, Lewis pulled into a tie for the team lead in sacks, leading in sack yardage.
A WIN OVER MVSU WOULD....
- Mark the fifth win of the season for the Wildcats, setting a program-high since joining the SWAC and under the tenure of Coach Woodie.
- Be the ninth win all-time for B-CU over the Delta Devils in 11 meetings
- Guarantee the Wildcats sit at worst third in the SWAC East, with the potential to jump all the way up to first place pending results from Jack-son State and Alabama State.
- Be the sixth straight home win for B-CU - the longest streak since the 2016-17 seasons.
- Mark B-CU's fourteenth win since joining the SWAC in 2021.
- Set a program-high in SWAC wins in a season (4)
- Notch win number 10 in the career of Head Coach Raymond Woodie.
- Mark an undefeated season at home for the Wildcats since 2017.
Saturday marks the 11th meeting all-time between MVSU and B-CU. The Wildcats have won 8 of 10 previous meetings, including four straight.
